How do I stain a door that has water streaks?

Chris C asked:

I’m trying to restain my bathroom door, but over the years, it looks like water has penetrated the wood. I’ve tried sanding, but the stains don’t seem to get out. I can’t stain over it, because it’s plainly obvious that there are water stains. Any suggestions on how to fix the problem?

You can purchase wood bleach at a local paint store. It is a 2 part bleach, much stronger than household bleach. Wear gloves and protective eyewear. Blaech the entire door according to package instructions and rinse. You will most likely have to neutralize the door prior to finishing.
