How do I lift a French door when it opens, to keep it from hitting the (sloped) floor?
May 4th, 2008 | by door |MadScientist asked:
I have a set of French doors installed by the previous owners of my house. It is over a converted patio, so the floor slopes slightly (down towards the doors). The problem is that the doors will only open about 70° before they hit the floor. Are there hinges that are available that would lift the door up as it’s opened? Or is there some other solution? I don’t want the doors to open outside, and I don’t want to have to pull out the door frame. Thanks!
The floor is tiled, so I can’t grind it down - wouldn’t want to anyway; that would make the floor uneven. the doors are steel, so I can’t trim them.

I found some ‘rising butt hinges’ online that will solve the problem… thanks anyway.

I think a better option would be to grind down the concrete on the patio. I know of no hinge system that would lift a door as it opens, plus it would mess with the way the door sets in the frame, so I wouldn’t go that route. The concrete shouldn’t slope towards the door and house, it should have a very slight slope away from the house to direct rainwater away. If this isn’t the case, grinding it down can help and be a pretty simple solution. You could grind down the bottom of the door if it is wood, but then you will have a door that is unlevel at the bottom once you do close it.

No, new hinges won’t do it. Need to reinstall the door higher in the opening so will not hit the floor. Add a piece of 1/2″ plywood under the door sill.

A fix would be to take the door out and raise the header, then you would have to raise the threshold or you can plane the door down and reseal the thresh. Grinding down the concrete is a bummer and might crack the patio. I did remodeling for several years and I am unaware of a hinge that will fix the problem, the door will be the same size and so will the floor??

Remove the door and trim off the bottom of the door so it will open fully. Then you will need to adjust or install an adjustable stoop plate to make sure the door is sealed fully when closed. The reason the floor slopes is because it was an open patio at first and a slight slope was necessary to insure that rainwater would run away from the house instead of toward it.

yes there is a hinges for that kind of door- look at hafele architectural hardware - or trim the bottom of the door just enough to open it at 90 deg.then provide weather strip at the bottom to avoid water and insect to come in

I was curious so I searched the web and came up with the following web site that advertised the hinges that you described. Check: It might be the product you are looking for. …Good Luck…
