Does the Door blocked with a Chair barricade strategy really work?

I always see it in movies and tv shows where someone blocks/prevents someone from coming into a door by putting a chair by the door handle. The person trying to open the dorr tries really hard to break it open but cannot.
I have tried this but everytime i do it the person can open the door easily with little resistance. The chair would usually slide with the door or just fall over.
Am I doing it wrong or is this something that is just made up in the movies? Is it really effective and if so how do you really do it?

I actually tried this and it worked, but it depends on the type of door knob you have. I have one that is elongated from the stub of the knob into a right angle. If it’s just a normal door knob, the strategy doesn’t work.
