I think it is a service entrance – if you were to have a nanny, housecleaner or plumber, etc., come in the old days they would use the back door. You can probably easily dump your trash from that exit, too — am I right?

Hm, Now i am comfortable with this however not entirely certain, therefore i’m going to research a bit more.
