How do I repair rear driver side door lock on 1990 Pontiac Bonneville?

April 16th, 2010

miklo asked:

It originally didn’t open at all. I removed inside door panel and vapor barrier and manipulated the latching mechanism until I could open the door. Upon further tinkering, I could get the door to open and close. This was looking good until I locked and unlocked the door. It would not open again without my manipulating the latching mechanism again. It seems that once it is locked and then unlocked, something I cannot see is not springing back into place. Any suggestions besides replacing the door would be most appreciated. Thank you.

Automatic Garage Door Openers are a Great Investment

April 14th, 2010
door
David Fishman asked:

The concept of a garage door system arrived during the Second World War. Garage Door Openers have been saving Americans from back injuries for over 35 years, yet there have been few new modifications or major innovations in these garage door openers. Believe it or not some people have voice activated garage door openers instead of you having to place your finger over the button when you walk from your house to the garage.

Garage door can keep the home safe because when they close the doors are locked automatically, this way you don’t have to worry about locking the doors. Garage doors are important features in a security system for a number of reasons and those who use openers, however, need to be mindful of a few things. The main parts in a garage door opener system are: transmitter, the remote control, safety sensors, key pads, receiver/remote kits, ***** drive and much more.

The garage door openers are automatic and so convenient they are standard in most garages today. An automatic garage door opener is not just a convenience; it’s an investment in your house, and an important home appliance that will get daily use for many years to come. An automatic garage door opener is a terrific convenience and it may give you a sense of security as well.

When building a home it is sometimes confusing when trying to figure out the opening of the garage door. The rough opening for a garage door, simply put, is the actual size of the door itself. You should make sure the garage door is properly balanced you can do this by slowly opening and closing the door, when the bottom of the door hits the floor evenly and the door doesn’t sway back and forth the door is balanced.

The reason garage door openers do not burn out is because the springs allow the door to open easily by pulling the door up so the opener has less strain on the motor, the springs also help if you need to open the door manually. Usually two types of springs are used linear expansion and tensional springs. The springs on your garage door can pose a safety hazard. These kinds of springs are installed over a shaft that helps roll the door up to the open position. Garage door springs are very dangerous, even when the garage is closed, as they contain large amounts of potential energy (that’s just waiting to be suddenly converted to kinetic energy, ie movement) and have killed or seriously injured many people.

Some garage door openers offer heavier steel or a sturdier design. Some garage door openers do not use the steel chain pulley system; they use a ***** threaded steel rod that turns to move the garage door up and down. If you are deciding on which type of garage door to purchase keep in mind the differences between wood and metal, the wood doors need to be taken care of just like a deck, you need to stain or paint it so it doesn’t rot, a steel door is easier to maintain. If you decide to get a steel door the main thing to check is that it has been properly prepared to prevent rust.

An Examination of French Doors

April 10th, 2010
door
John Harpsmith asked:

The origin of of French doors can be dated back to the end of the Renaissance period in the 17th century. The original intent of French doors was to allow natural light to flow from room to room and keep homes illuminated for long periods during the day. By the end of the 1600’s, England was featuring French doors for the first time, and sometime after that they starting appearing in America, especially in Louisiana where they are still seen today.

French doors are decorative doors that contain glass windows. These windows are sometimes alternately called lights. Often times, French doors will be double doors.  These florid doors are characterized by numerous unique features that separate them other doors. These characteristics generally include: Glazed glass, elaborate wood carvings, and sometimes even stained glass. Folding and sliding designs of French doors are also manufactured, and they are gaining in prevalence.

French doors can replace patio doors to provide more light into the home. In fact, French doors can be common in every room of the house. French doors make great front doors, and can be secured to the ground with locks for security. Most people elect to exhibit French doors in every room of their house, because they add sunlight as well as a breathtaking ambiance to every room they’re featured in.

There are multiple styles of French doors currently being made. The most common style are double French doors. These doors can be installed in bathrooms, bedrooms, or the office and swing open nicely to give the room a warm atmosphere. Double French doors come in two styles: In-swing, which are hung so they open into a room, and out-swing doors which open to the outside of the room. The style of your preference can be determined by where you plan to install the doors.

Another style is folding or multi panel French doors. Folding French doors are a double French door that slides into a panel to conserve space. This design adds both light and a modern look to your outdoor patio or room. These doors can either open fully or partially and are hinged together like an accordion and are stationed on a single track that allows for fast opening and closing.

French doors can either be installed inside or outside of the home, and will always give the area you choose a stylish and contemporary appearance.

Composite Doors-selecting the Right Door

March 13th, 2010
door
Sunil Punjabi asked:

There are different types of Aluminum Composite Doors that can be designed, customized and made to order. The doors are made in Single Layer, Double Layer, or Triple Layer. The Single layer doors use a single sheet of aluminum to make the doors. The Double Layer doors are more durable and also sound proof. The first layer of the double layer door is of Aluminum, while the second layer is of polyurethane foam. The Triple layer Composite Doors are stronger, durable and sound proof. The first layer of these doors is made from galvanized aluminum, wit a second layer of polyurethane foam, and a third layer of galvanized aluminum again. You can order these doors according to your requirement and design. The Double and Triple layered doors are more suitable for offices, than homes.

Composite Doors are available all over the UK and the world and are more eco-friendly than wooden doors or any other kind of door. These doors are best suited for the UK, due to the prevalent weather conditions, but can be used anywhere as they provide more security than conventional wooden doors. If security is a concern for your home, then installing these sturdy and strong composite doors are a must. These doors can be fitted with special locking systems that make it more difficult to break into the house. Conventional Wooden and plywood doors can easily be broken and the so can the locking system. Whether you are a resident of Delhi in India or Colchester in UK, the doors will provide the required security.

A big difference is that Delhi residents may have to search for a manufacturer who makes Composite Doors, while residents of UK and Colchester can order the doors easily from a manufacturers website. In fact, Composite Doors Colchester can be delivered by manufacturers in less than a week. With customizable designs and ready to design software available on the company websites, it is a pleasure to design a custom door for your home. Customers can not only select and create designs, they can also specify colors, locking systems, dimensions of the door, and customers can actually see the door taking shape and color right before their eyes. They can also discard a design and start afresh, as many times as required, until they finally find a design and color that they like. Besides the Door color, they can also specify colors for the frame of the door.

While designing, customers can also select the type of glass they would like for the door. They can select from glass designs, glass patterns, or unglazed glass, for the Composite Doors. The glass designs are in geometric, and floral designs, with the white or black background. The glass for your door partitions can also be fitted with pattern glass in several different designs available. Some additional embellishments and security extras can be added to the doors like stylish knockers, security chain, special hinges and doorknobs, an Urn with a spy hole, etc. Once the door has been finalized, the customer can order the door to be delivered, or request a quote for the custom door and delivery schedule.

Genie Garage Doors Opener

February 27th, 2010
door
Jim Kesel asked:

If you own a home with a garage door more than likely you will also have some kind of automatic garage door opener. If your contractor installed the door opener when your home was built in most cases it was the cheapest model available. Using garage doors pricing to select a garage door opener is usually not a good idea. Frequently these automatic garage door openers begin to fail within a few short years. Not having a quality garage door opener installed in your garage will not only lead to an inconvenient failure but also could put your home and family at risk.

Genie garage doors openers have been around for a long time and have set the standard for automatic garage door openers. There are probably more Genie garage doors openers in American homes than in any other brand of automatic garage door opener. They manufacture a full line of home garage door openers including several models that can easily installed by just about any home owner.

You can find Genie garage doors openers for sale in most of the big box home improvement stores including Home Depot and Lowes. The staff of each of these retailers will help you decide what garage door opener you need and provide helpful information on installation. In most cases you can install your genie garage doors opener within 3 hours if you have the assistance of a second person. A single person can also install a garage door opener in about 4 hours. In most cases installation will only require regular household tools to accomplish.

In addition these home improvement stores will also arrange for professional installation if desired. In most cases unless you are going to need several wired keypads a professional installer will complete the job of installation in less than an hour. Genie garage doors opener systems feature wireless keypad systems that make installation very simple. The Genie Homelink and Intellicode one systems will assure that your garage will not be opened by thieves. Every time the garage door is operated the operational code is changed and there are more than 4 billion different combinations so it is unlikely that someone will be able to access your garage with a remote scanning device.

The Genie Excellerator garage doors opener will open your garage at twice the speed of a conventional garage door opener. This is a great feature if you are worried about security. Instead of waiting for your garage door to open the Excellerator will open fast enough to allow you to continue move your vehicle into the garage without stopping.

Unfortunately the major flaw in the system is that it only closes the door at normal speed allowing an intruder to enter the garage before the door closes. No doubt that this feature was fostered by some idiot company attorney that was worried about liability. I guess they figure that it is much better to be murdered by an intruder than be foolishly hit by a closing garage door.

In general you will find that Genie garage doors openers are a great way to efficiently open and close your garage doors. We would have preferred to have a way of integrating the system into the home security system. Never the less we do recommend Genie garage doors openers for your home.

Security Doors in the Workplace - Wood or Steel Security Doors?

February 23rd, 2010
door
Lee Jackson asked:

For any business considering an investment in high security doors and are unsure whether to opt for wood or steel doors the following real life story will help make that decision;

A high-rise apartment building wished to offer residents the highest possible security. Double steel security doors were installed in every unit. One day whilst out & about, an elderly tenant had an accident and was taken to the hospital. Neighbours became worried when they noticed his untouched newspaper outside his apartment the following day and called the police to break in to see if the elderly gentleman was in trouble. The police and fire departments thought the door was a painted wooden one and attempted to break their way in. Upon realising it was a steel security door, they sent for additional assistance. After almost an hour using two determined workers with special tools the rescue team pried the steel framework apart enough to disengage the locks on this 30 year old steel door. The high security steel doors had done their job!

Statistics reflect that more than 70% of burglars focus on a building’s door to gain entry. No matter how high quality the locks may be, if a wooden door can be broken the locks are useless, unlike steel doors.

If the workplace consists of several offices/rooms in a commercial building open to the public a business is at even greater risk and security alarms often do not bring authorities until 10 or 15 minutes have passed. This is plenty of time for a wooden door or doorframe to be broken, the workplace entered, and valuables taken. There is a reason that most safes and safe deposit boxes aren’t made of wood!

With steel security doors tests on their strength are an industry requirement. These tests guarantee buyers that steel doors cannot be broken into in such a manner.

Every aspect of steel security doors’ design, manufacture and installation guarantee that a buyer is obtaining the optimum in security. This offers a peace of mind that is hard to find with other types of high security doors, and should be a priority to most business owners. Plus, although “fire doors” can be purchased, businesses still receive excellent protection against the spread of fire with steel security doors. (Providers should have their doors’ fire ratings and fire resistance standards available for discussion.) Steel doors also provide increased energy efficiency, since they insulate the cold air from outside up to 4 times better than wooden doors.

Steel doors are made to a building’s specifications, with many factors measured for an exact fit. Openings for the locks are expertly engineered with no room for error. The metal framework fits perfectly to eliminate any space in which to slide the slimmest tool or crowbars. Installers take special measures to ensure the heavy doors are hung with perfect balance and all hardware is flush with surrounding surfaces. The entire process, including manufacture and delivery, can take several weeks, and the installation can require 5 hours, but the steel security door can last forever. It can’t rot, warp or otherwise change shape, thus eliminating a potentially dangerous situation!

There are many choices open to a business which is considering steel security doors, and after discussing the many options with a professional supplier, the buyer will know that they are getting a door that meets their unique needs. However, there are some aspects of high security doors that are standard, such as protections from rust and corrosion, various designs and finishes (most which require no maintenance), and the opportunity to choose locking mechanisms and the direction of swing. Some doors offer anti-lever cover plates, anti-crushing surfaces, anti-jimmy strips and reinforced steel edges to further enhance protection. With more than 65% of homeowners choosing entry doors made of steel, it makes sense for a business to consider them as well! Since every kind of steel security door can be accommodated by existing structures, even a business located in an old garage, carriage house, or condominium can take advantage of the protection it offers. Materials used in construction include galvanized or zintec steel. A few points to remember are that, when comparing types of steel, the stronger the steel, the lower the gauge number it carries. (Plus, the stronger it is, the more the steel will resist dents.) This number should be referred to as “true gauge” and not “nominal”, since the latter means it’s not quite at the rating it’s carrying. In addition, hot-dip galvanizing appears to offer more protection against rust than electro-galvanizing, which may leave some areas uncovered.

A steel door specialist can discuss what may be best for a buyer’s needs, and can explain the guarantee of parts, manufacture and anti-perforation abilities. He or she can also explain the pricing options; steel security doors range greatly in price, depending on customer choice. However, it is possible to purchase a high quality, high security door for less than expected. Although it may be a little more expensive than a standard wooden door, the benefits are definitely worth it!

Consider Safe Premium Garage Doors For Your Home

February 11th, 2010

Jim Kesel asked:

There are many garage manufactures that make good garage doors. However there are only a few that make quality garage door systems. A garage door must not only look good from the street but it must also function flawlessly. Today it is important that you find a garage door manufacture that produces a complete door system that will integrate with your home or business security systems. In most cases the garage door opening is the weakest point in your structure. Using garage doors pricing to select a garage door may not be smart. Spending money on a safe quality garage door will ensure that your home and business will remain secure is a wise decision.

Martin Garage doors are known for their safety innovations that protect families and pets. They were the first to design and manufacture no pinch panel joint system that prevents serious finger and hand injuries. Their shielded track and roller system keep kids and pets from by trapped and pinch during door opener operations. Garage doors are not toys and adults need to closely observe the operation of their garage door opener when in operation. Photographic eye systems that sense obstructions should never be bypassed. Martin garage door openers have a new no photo eye feature that prevents injury during door closures. Called the soft touch reverse system it accurately senses an obstruction and quickly reverse door direction prior to any injury.

Martin garage doors heavy metal doors use 24 gauge steel panels to assure strength. In general their construction is heavy enough to with stand normal wind and storm loads. None of the Martin garage doors meet the Miami-Dade wind codes and should not be used in hurricane or high wind risk areas. Use only doors specifically designed for winds exceeding 140 miles per hour. In general retrofitting a standard garage door will not meet the protection needed during a category 2 plus storm.

Martin garage doors openers are considered to be one of the best on the market today. They are reliable and are relatively quiet during their operation due to their belt drives. There are a wide range of options that include secure remote and panel controls. Martins insulated Steel garage door panels feature foam insulation that is sandwiched between two steel panels. These energy efficient garage door panels will reduce your overall energy costs while allowing you to have comfortable use of your garage year around.

Probably the best product that Martin Garage doors makes is its copper models. Nothing beats copper for looks and durability. If you have ever observed the roof of a time monastery or Catholic church you will see a brown/green metal roof that really looks neat. When first installed the copper doors also are very striking as well but the beauty comes through as the surface naturally corrodes. They have a service that will speed up the process if you cannot wait for Mother Nature.

Martin garage doors are UL approved and are sold worldwide. They have a relatively good reputation for customer service which makes them a good buy when looking for a premium garage door.
